SRTA understands that members are uncomfortable signing a document under threat of termination that they have not and could not possibly read and understand.
We put out a recommendation on Monday, but many members asked for something stronger, something that they could sign that shows they have received the document but have not read and understood it.
We encourage members to print the first page, fill it out and sign it, and deliver it to your principal by Thursday’s deadline if you can or after if you missed it. Please keep a copy for your records. Probs and temps may choose to skip this action if they are trying to keep a low profile.
Know that this is a concerted action. The more of us that do it, the more impact it will have, and harder it will be for them to discipline us. The first step of the progressive discipline in our contract is a verbal warning, followed by a written warning not in your file, followed by letter in your file. If, after refusing to sign their illegal directive four times, they decide to terminate a member, and they do, SRTA and CTA will fight it forcefully.
Further, SRTA is working with CTA lawyers to get the entire directive rescinded. It is an overreach of the law asking us to “read and understand” when the law and our board policies only require that we acknowledge receipt.
Thank you for the giving feedback to the SRTA leadership, and thank you for standing up for our rights under the contract and the law. When we fight, we win.
